Lumley General Insurance Refreshes IT Infrastructure with Unisys Mainframes

Unisys ClearPath Libra 4090 server pay-for-use business model chosen to lower computing costs, while improving agility, scalability and service delivery

Auckland, 30 March, 2010 – Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS) today announced that its New Zealand subsidiary has been awarded a three-year renewal by Lumley General Insurance in New Zealand to implement a technology refresh of the IT infrastructure supporting the company’s current core insurance applications.  The renewal builds on a 20-year relationship in which Unisys has provided mainframe and data centre services.

The implementation includes two ClearPath Libra 4090 mainframe servers, which feature a pay-for-use business model and metering technology that will allow Lumley to pay for only the resources it consumes, while providing the ability to tap into additional processing power when needed.

“The pay-as-you-use capability of the Unisys solution is designed to support the fundamentals of our business – the need to be able to access and process the right information to support our customers, within a flexible, cost effective and responsive structure,” said Mike Gardner, IT Manager, Lumley Insurance.

The ClearPath servers will support the current Lumley core insurance applications, which are used to underwrite and process policies.  They will be housed at the Unisys New Zealand data centres at Auckland and Kapiti, near Wellington, to provide data centre back-up capability.

”These are the first ClearPath Libra 4090s in New Zealand.  Their metering ability provides Lumley with a much greater level of flexibility to better match their IT infrastructure to their business cycles.  Previously, Lumley would have had to buy a monthly processing capacity cap based on the performance requirements during their busiest periods – meaning they could be paying for idle capacity during quieter periods.  Now they can pay as they go,” said Brett Hodgson, Managing Director, Unisys New Zealand.

“Ultimately the ClearPath Libra 4090 gives the customer the best of both worlds:  it provides Lumley with the mission-critical reliability, throughput and security you expect from a mainframe with the ability to pay only for what is used,” Mr Hodgson added.
